93% voting in favour of strike action....

Please be advised that we have counted the ballots returned in our request for a strike mandate. Your negotiating committee thanks every member who voted in this matter and for the tremendous response and support from the ballots sent out this past month. There were 3624 ballots sent out to the membership. The ballots were counted in Calgary, February 6th, with 93% voting in favor of strike action.

Throughout the past week, we continued to participate in the mediation process with the assistance of FMCS. The Company has made little movement in regards to their demands to diminish your working conditions.

As you are aware, two significant issues were reported this week that have hampered negotiations. Namely, the Company continues to displace bargaining unit employees in order to continue training their Managers and they have altered the rates of pay to trainees and the step rates. With respect to the bargaining unit employees, we are seeking to have the CIRB award registered and enforced by the courts. With respect to the training and step rates, the Company has committed to adhering to the collective agreement.

Also, during the past week, all Local Chairman, Division Presidents and Secretary Treasures were given several documents regarding the preparations necessary in the event a strike or lockout occurs on February 15. While we are committed to negotiating collective agreements, we must move forward to make the arrangements for a work stoppage. We would ask that everyone assist the local executive and strike captains in this necessary procedure. The bargaining committee will provide updates and support as needed.

With the show of your overwhelming support we are hoping that this will encourage the Company to negotiate terms acceptable to you, the members. Our next session is scheduled on February 10-14 in Montreal.

We will continue in our attempt to arrive at a negotiated settlement. Your Bargaining Committee will keep you informed on any further developments.

In Solidarity,

Dave Fulton,
